Hash Calculator
Type text or drop a file - SHA hashes are computed with your browser's own crypto engine, nothing is uploaded.

...or hash a file instead:
What is a hash for?
- Checking a download: compare the file's SHA-256 with the publisher's - one changed byte changes the whole hash.
- Fingerprinting content: identical inputs always produce identical hashes.
- Hashing is one-way - the hash cannot be turned back into the original text or file.
- Computed with the Web Crypto API built into your browser, the same engine your bank's website uses.
Why is there no MD5?
Browsers do not offer MD5 in their crypto API, and MD5 is considered broken for security use. If a legacy system asks for MD5, treat it as a label, not protection.
Is my file uploaded for hashing?
No. The file is read into your browser and hashed on your device. Large files may take a moment - that is your CPU doing the work, not a network transfer.
